Be Sure to Stock Your First Aid Kit with Oral Care Items

Even though you can never prevent an oral injury from ever happening to your mouth, there are a few essential oral care items that Ken Caryl Dental Center’s team of dentists recommend that you keep stocked in your first aid kit. Having them quick at hand can help you better deal with an oral emergency should one happen.

Waxed dental floss is a very helpful tool for removing food particles or foreign objects from between teeth or the gum line The waxy coating allows the strand to slide between teeth easier than unwaxed floss. It could also be helpful to keep a floss threader in the kit. This will allow you to work around a foreign object from a different angle.

If one of your teeth is knocked out, one of our dentists might be able to implant it back into the socket. In order to do this, the knocked out tooth needs to be whole and alive. Fortunately, there are tooth preservation products that do an even better job of keeping teeth alive.

Having salt packets and a plastic cup on hand will allow you quickly prepare a saltwater rinse. This can help clear blood and debris from your mouth and also help soothe injured tissues. Topical oral analgesic can be rubbed onto your gums to partially numb the area for a short time.

Many oral injuries have some swelling associated with them. Keeping a few zip-top bags and a washcloth in your first aid kit can help you improvise a cold compress.
